Frequently asked questions
Straight answers, before you drop in a file.
01
The basics
Is Cromagnon free?
Yes. Every studio and quick tool is free to use, with no watermarks, no trials and no daily limits. A free account adds sync between devices and 50 MB of cloud files. There is nothing to buy right now.
What's the difference between a studio and a tool?
A studio is a full workspace for one kind of work — like PDF Studio or Study Studio — with autosave, many features and real file export. A quick tool does one small job, like formatting JSON or counting words. There are 10 studios today, with Resume Studio, Contract Studio coming soon.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in your web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. If you like, you can also install Cromagnon as an app from your browser for a home-screen icon and offline use.
Which browsers are supported?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and their mobile versions. A few features depend on the browser: voice answers need speech recognition (Chrome and Edge have it), and installing as an app works best in Chrome, Edge and Safari.
02
Privacy and your files
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Files are opened and processed inside your browser, on your own device. For security we log only each file's name, size and type — never its contents. They are only sent to our servers if you choose to — for example, by syncing Study Studio decks after signing in, publishing a deck to the library, or saving to your cloud files.
Where is my work saved?
In your browser's own storage on your device, automatically. Clearing your browser's site data removes it, so export important work or sign in to sync it.
Do you use trackers or ads?
No ads and no cross-site trackers. For security and to improve Cromagnon we keep a 30-day log of tool opens and file names (with IP address and browser). The full details are in the privacy notice.
03
Files, formats and languages
Which file formats can I open?
PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX, XLS), CSV and TSV, PowerPoint (PPTX, PPSX), images (JPG, PNG, WEBP, AVIF, GIF, SVG, BMP), text, Markdown, HTML, JSON, YAML, XML and Anki decks (APKG), among others. Each studio lists what it opens and exports.
Can I edit a PDF for free?
Yes. PDF Studio lets you annotate, highlight, add text and images, sign, redact, merge, split, reorder, rotate, compress, fill forms, protect with a password and make scans searchable with OCR.
Can I open Word, Excel and PowerPoint without Microsoft Office?
Yes. Document Studio opens and saves real DOCX files, Excel Studio edits XLSX with working formulas, and Presentation Studio opens and exports PPTX decks.
Which languages are supported?
Right-to-left scripts such as Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu work across the studios. Study Studio reads scanned pages, speaks and listens in 107 languages.
Why do very old DOC or PPT files sometimes behave differently?
Older Microsoft Office formats use a legacy binary structure that browsers can't always read fully. Saving them as DOCX or PPTX first gives the best results.
04
Study Studio
Is Study Studio a free alternative to Quizlet and Anki?
Yes. It's free, imports Anki (.apkg) and Quizlet decks, uses the FSRS memory model that modern Anki uses, has eight study modes, audio and maths on cards, and works offline on your phone.
Can teachers use it with a class?
Yes. Sign in, create a class, share decks with the class code, and see each student's progress on those decks. Students only share a progress summary for the class decks — never their answers or other decks.
Can I turn my notes into flashcards?
Yes. Drop a PDF, Word document, PowerPoint, spreadsheet or a photo of your notes into Study Studio's Import tab, or use the Flashcards button in PDF Studio and Document Studio.
05
Accounts
Do I need an account?
No. A free account is optional and adds sync of your study decks between devices, the public deck library and classes.
Is there a paid plan?
Not right now — everything is free, including sync and 50 MB of cloud files. If a paid plan comes later, it will only be for extras that cost us money to run, such as more cloud space. What is free today stays free.
How can I pay?
By card, bank transfer, Wise, Payoneer, JazzCash, EasyPaisa or crypto. See the pricing page for details.
Can I suggest a tool or report a problem?
Please do — send the file format, the task and the result you need through the contact page.
